So you’re trying to lose weight and get in shape then all of a sudden you begin to lose motivation.

#1 Obsessively Seeking Gymspiration

While identifying what kind of shape you want to get in can be a good way of visualizing your goals, too much can also be counterproductive.

After all, no two bodies are the same, and modeling what you want your own physique to look like on a celebrity (who undoubtedly has the advantage of pretty awesome personal trainers) may actually lead to desperation or even depression.

By all means, seek good role models, but try to stay realistic about what you can achieve over time and make sure you’re not spending too many hours flicking through Instagram.

Just get in the gym and start working out and worry less about what your role model whith $500 per hour fitness trainers looks like!

#2 You Feel Guilty About Daily Performance

Unless you’re training for a marathon or a bodybuilding contest, you probably don’t need to be exercising every single day.

While some daily activity is good, as studies have shown sitting at a desk for eight hours without moving is very bad for you, your body also needs to rest between workouts.

For example, it’s a good idea to rest specific muscle groups for 24-48 hours to ensure they recover before they’re worked out again.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean skipping the gym entirely every other day, if you’re getting in a good amount of sessions over the week but missing the odd day, then don’t beat yourself up over it.

Instead of feeling guilty because you were genuinely too busy to work out on a specific day, just let it go and take an honest look at your performance over the week overall.

#3 Telling Yourself There’s No Point if You Can’t Get to the Gym

Don’t let an expired membership or a busy day stop you exercising if you’re otherwise motivated, though.

There are plenty of exercises, such as press-ups and crunches, which can be done at home with minimal or no equipment.

Investing in a couple of simple items like an exercise mat, dumbbells and skipping rope mean you can squeeze in some exercise even if you can’t make it to the gym. Any exercise is better than no exercise!

You might even find that exercising at home motivates you more because you can do it whenever you like and with privacy.

#4 Trying Too Much Too Soon

While the decision to get into shape can be empowering, exhilarating even, it’s important to be realistic or you’re going to get bored or burn out pretty quickly.

The initial rush is great, because exercising can seem a little tough at first, but it definitely gets a lot easier when you make a habit out of it.

By all means, experiment and have fun trying things out, but signing up for five intense classes a week and deciding you’re going to jog every single morning before work is not the best plan for those starting out with exercising.

Instead, create a more realistic strategy that builds up gradually to increase your strength and endurance.

There’s no doubt that exercise takes a lot of determination, and motivation is a key element in sticking to any routine.

By ensuring that you’re having fun and avoiding practices which actually demotivate you, you’re far more likely to stick to your regimen and continue a healthy and active way of life for years to come.
